Two local residents were honoured this week when winners of BC Culture Days’ 2017 Ambassador and Awards program were announced.

Among seven chosen from across the province were Surrey’s Lyn Verra-Lay and Semiahmoo First Nation’s Roxanne Charles.

Each ambassador is awarded $1,000 to be put towards the production of their own Culture Days activity and, according to a news release, “will act as a spokesperson for BC Culture Days” leading up to the Culture Days weekend Sept 29-Oct. 1.

Verra-Lay’s project is titled “50 Years of Culture: Celebrating the Surrey Arts Centre,” while Charles’ initiative will focus on “Semiahmoo Culture.”

Culture Days “raises the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.”

The release also notes that, in addition, chosen winners will be “engaging the public in discussions around arts and culture and encouraging them to participate behind the scenes with B.C. artists, curators, heritage experts and other creative people.”
