THREE THINGS TO DO: VSO’s final concert, birthday cake with a queen, and one bluesy anniversary

1. Vancouver Symphony Orchestra concludes its 2016-17 Surrey Nights concert series with a performance by pianist Jonathan Biss on Sunday evening (May 21). Conductor Alexandre Bloch returns to lead the orchestra through compositions by Mozart, Schumann and Haydn. In particular, Mozart’s “Elvira Madigan” (Piano Concerto No. 21) is famous and beloved for its second movement. The music happens at Surrey’s Bell Performing Arts Centre starting at 8 p.m. For tickets and info, visit vancouversymphony.ca.

2. Party like it’s 1895 during Historic Stewart Farm’s annual Royal Victorian Party, on Sunday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Queen Victoria will be there for her birthday party, which features cake, ice cream, lemonade, games of croquet, photo ops with the royals and performances by the Vancouver Morris Men and Tiddley Cove dancers. 3. White Rock Blues Society celebrates its 10th anniversary this weekend with a concert by Tom Lavin’s Powder Blues Band on Saturday night (May 20). Events also include a slide-show video presentation on Friday and a day-long “Sunday Showcase” of bands, all at Pacific Inn Resort, located just off Highway 99 in South Surrey.
