An accident in Guildford claimed the life of a pedestrian on Saturday.

Around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, Surrey crews responded on scene after a 73-year-old was struck outside of Fire Hall 4 at 146th Street and 108 Avenue.

When crews arrived, they found a pedestrian unconscious and without a pulse.

Crews performed CPR on the victim until they arrived at Surrey Memorial Hospital, where the victim was later pronounced dead.

The 71-year-old woman from Vancouver who was driving the vehicle did remain at the scene. According to RCMP, neither speed or impairment are believed to be a factor.

The accident occurred just after sundown near a signalized pedestrian crosswalk. Surrey RCMP confirmed that the woman was jaywalking east of the crosswalk at 146th Street and 108 Avenue.

According to witnesses, it was dark but mostly dry at the time of the crash.

That stretch of 108th Avenue was closed for several hours while RCMP investigated.

With the days getting shorter, Surrey RCMP had some advice for both drivers and pedestrians.

“It’s generally a risky period when the lights change dramatically, which can affect visibility for both parties,” said Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann. “Certainly, lighter clothing will help make you more visible.”

“Pedestrians should always try to use a marked crosswalk when possible,” he said. “Don’t trust drivers to stop. Drivers need to be mindful of the changing weather conditions to slow down, which in turn will give them more reaction time.”

This was the second of three serious collisions involving pedestrians in the Lower Mainland on Saturday. A pedestrian was hit around noon in Langley after a rollover car accident. The second happened in Maple Ridge later last night after a pedestrian was struck at a bus stop.
