Police taped off part of South Surrey’s Bakerview Park Tuesday night, following the discovery of a man’s body.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann said passersby alerted police around 8:10 p.m.

A woman who said she was driving in the area around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday told Peace Arch News police had the southeast corner of the park – near 18 Avenue and 154 Street – cordoned off, and that two police SUVs and several officers could be seen.

Schumann said the deceased, described as in his mid-thirties, was “known to police as a local homeless person.”

“He may have been camping in the park,” Schumann said.

Schumann said the cause of death “is not readily apparent,” and that police have partnered with the BC Coroners Service on the investigation.

The man’s identity has not been released, and police are still trying to notify his next-of-kin.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
