VIDEOS: Surrey firefighters tackled three fires in North Surrey on Sunday

What caused the three fires has yet to be determined

Surrey firefighters tackled two house fires and a burning semi-trailer in the city’s north end this past Sunday.

“It was a busy weekend overall,” said Assistant Fire Chief Brian Woznikoski.

Twenty firefighters fought a two-alarm blaze at a two-story house in the 9600-block of 139th Street, near Surrey Memorial Hospital, at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. No injuries were reported. Firefighters used a ladder truck to attack the intense blaze from above as it ripped through the roof.

Woznikoski said firefighters had it beat by 3:20 a.m.

“It was so deep-seated,” he said.

The house, which was boarded up, had caught fire in January, displacing a family.

The second fire happened at a five-unit housing complex in the 12700-block of 88th Avenue and three units were damaged. Each was occupied and three residents were displaced. This happened just before 4 a.m.

“We also had some fires there in the past,” Woznikoski said. “Some of them appeared to be boarded up.”

Nobody was injured.

Then at about 12:45 p.m. the Surrey fire department received multiple 911 calls about a semi-trailer on fire in a compound behind a diesel company in Cloverdale, in the 17800-block of 64th Avenue.

Billowing black smoke was seen from afar as the fire gutted the trailer too. Woznikoski said the cab was burning when firefighters arrived.

“I can’t say that’s where it started,” Woznikoski said. “It was totally destroyed.”

He said one firefighter suffered a minor injury to his shoulder when a saddle tank on the truck exploded from the heat.

“He’s fine.”

What caused the three fires is still being determined.
