NEWTON — Faizaan Buttar’s popularity at school just grew by 5,000 per cent.

The seven-year-old Grade 2 student at Surrey Muslim School in Newton has won a $5,000 technology award for his school and a Chromebook for himself after placing first in his age category in Doodle 4 Google, a Canada-wide competition that challenged students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 to redesign Google’s logo.

From more than 10,000 submissions, 12 finalists were chosen nationwide. Faizaan won in the Kindergarten to Grade 3 category for his doodle, “A Beautiful World.”

The national winner’s doodle will be on Google.ca’s search engine all day today (June 14). The winner, Jana Sofia Panem, of Toronto, also won a $10,000 university scholarship for her entry, A Bright Future. Faizaan and his family took part in the ceremony in Toronto.

“He’s very excited,” his dad Muhammad Chaudry told the Now-Leader beforehand.

“All of the family. We have a ceremony to attend, everybody is going,” he said.
