ARLAND, "Josephine ‘Jo’ (nee Hand)

Aged 95, born in London, England, July 12, 1911, passed away 21 June, 2007, at 100 Mile House, B.C. Married to William Arland (pre-deceased) after emigrating to Canada in 1949, and lived in the Toronto area before moving to British Columbia in 1956.

Jo worked as an apartment manager in Surrey, and was an advocate for welfare recipients, single mothers, and others. She received awards from Soroptimist Club, Surrey Municipal Council, Newton Seniors Advocacy Centre, to name a few, for her work with under-privileged families and women’s rights. “Arland Mews” housing co-op in Delta was named in her honour for her efforts to attain provincial and federal funding for the project.

Jo was a past president of the B.C. Old Age Pensioners Association.

It is her wish to have her remains cremated.

The family would like to thank the health care workers at Fischer Place care facility at 100 Mile House and the volunteers of the Hospice Society for their wonderful support."
