SURREY — Construction begins this year on two new multi-sheet arena complexes in Surrey.

Starting in April, a three-sheet facility called North Surrey Sport and Ice Complex will be built at 12780 110th Ave., south of the Home Depot store.

The $52-million arena is scheduled to open in the spring of 2019. Sometime after that date, the current North Surrey rec centre would be torn down, or “decommissioned,” in the words of Laurie Cavan, general manager of Surrey’s Parks, Recreation & Culture department.

Meanwhile, the new Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex will include two sheets of ice, or floors, with a possible one- to two-sheet future addition, at 17770 64th Ave., just east of Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre. Construction there is scheduled to begin this August, with  completion also in the spring of 2019. The facility is estimated to cost $35 million.

Surrey-based user groups, including ice hockey, figure skating, ringette, lacrosse and ball hockey clubs, are “definitely excited” about the two arena projects being built, Cavan said.
