The Earl Marriott Mariners’ senior girls volleyball team will enter playoffs this month on a high, after taking top spot at the 18th annual Red Serge Classic tournament last weekend in Coquitlam.
The Mariners – currently No. 4 in B.C. senior girls quad-A volleyball rankings – defeated Langley Christian in the championship game Saturday at Riverside Secondary. Langley Christian is also among the province’s best squads, and is currently sixth in provincial AA rankings.
The Semiahmoo Totems finished third overall, while other Surrey squads taking part included the Pacific Academy Breakers, and Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers.
Langley Christian’s Savannah Caterino-Leger was named the tournament’s most-valuable player, while four South Surrey players were named to the all-star team: Tyra Anderson and Danica Cowie from Earl Marriott, and Jordan Aisenstat from Semiahmoo.
Eleven teams took part in the two-day competition, which kicked off Friday with an opening ceremony that including Mounties wearing the traditional red serge. Coquitlam RCMP Cst. Laura Lytwynec – a former university athlete – also spoke.
