Surrey’ Khaira signs two-year extension with Edmonton Oilers

Surrey Minor Hockey product has played 25 career NHL games

Surrey’s Jujhar Khaira has a home in the National Hockey League for the next two seasons, after signing a two-year contract extension Friday with the Edmonton Oilers.

The contract is worth $675,000 per season.

However, despite the new deal, it is not a certaintly that the 22-year-old forward – who was drafted by the Oilers in the third round of the 2012 draft and has 25 NHL games under his belt – plays next season in the City of Champions.

Khaira is expected to be one of a handful of Oilers players left unprotected in next week’s expansion draft, which will see the league’s newest team, the Vegas Golden Knights, select one player from each of the NHL’s other 30 teams.

Khaira might not be the only local hockey product exposed by the Oilers in the expansion proceedings. Cloverdale’s Laurent Brossoit – who served part of last season as the Oilers’ backup goaltender – is also likely to be made available to the Knights; teams can only protect one goaltender, and Edmonton is expected to protect their starter, Cam Talbot.
