Sobeys is planning to build a 530,563 sq. ft. warehouse and distribution facility in South Surrey’s Campbell Heights Industrial Area.

According to the development proposal, much of the building – planned for 18890 22 Ave. – is to be refrigerated to allow for the handling of produce and other food products.

“The proposed facility will form a critical component of Sobey’s supply chain immediately and into the future. The facility will allow for continued growth throughout mainland BC and Vancouver Island and provide critical access to the labour required to facilitate this growth,” according to the proposal.

The distribution facility is expected to employ approximately 200 full-time equivalent positions.

Sobeys is requesting variances to reduce the number of parking spaces, increase the allowable number of parking spaces for trucks and trailers within the loading area, increase the maximum building height and reduced setbacks.

City staff recommend approval of both the draft development permit and variances.

The application is to be before council’s regular land use meeting this evening.

Earlier this year, Walmart Canada announced it was investing $175 million in a frozen grocery facility in Campbell Heights.
