The Surrey Marathon has taken the official steps needed to be a qualifying event for the historic Boston Marathon.

When the runners participating in the full or half marathon components of the inaugural Surrey International World Music Marathon begin their run, they will be setting history as well as taking the first step towards the world of marathon’s biggest event – the Boston Marathon. Despite it being the first year of the event, the Surrey Marathon has taken the official steps needed to be a “qualifying event” for the historic Boston race.

“It’s very exciting that, despite never having staged the Surrey event, we were able to obtain official certification of our course, which is the preface to being a Boston qualifier,” says Surrey Marathon Race Director Tim Hopkins. “The measurement and certification of a course is a very technical process, but we were confident going into the official measurement. Response by elite runners who have looked at the course think it will be an excellent experience for elite as well as beginner participants and we anticipate very fast times out of it.”

The legendary Boston Marathon, which is held annually in a number of cities in Greater Boston on the third Monday of April, is one of the world’s best-known road racing events. Certification of the Surrey event means participants successful at the Surrey Marathon are pre-qualified to participate in the iconic Boston race.

For those interested in participating in the inaugural event in the full, half, relay, 5K or Kids events, registration is open now at www.surreymarathon.com.  Information packages are also available at the Central City Shopping Centre customer service centre and The Run Inn.
