Surrey's newest public building has been named the city's most bike friendly.
The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC) has named Surrey's $36-million City Centre Library as the city's most bike-friendly building.
The new library at 10350 University Drive was selected as part of the VACC's first "Most Bike-able" building assessment.
In the pilot program with Surrey, four buildings were assessed for end-of-trip bicycle facilities.
Some of the criteria considered were undercover and secure parking for bikes, showers and change room, and corporate culture in support of cycling.
The Bike-able Building assessments use a points-based system to understand where a building stands in terms of bike-friendliness, and then recommendations are made on the most high impact changes to improve the number of people cycling to work or shop.
In 2012, the VACC will be offering this assessment across the region.
