500-day countdown to Women's World Softball Championship in Surrey

SURREY — Tuesday (March 3) marked 500 days until the first batter steps up to the plate at the 2016 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) XV Women’s World Softball Championship, to be held in Surrey.

A "Countdown Celebration" was held Tuesday at Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club.

“We are committed to creating an unparalleled World Championship experience for everyone involved,” said Greg Timm, president of the Canadian Open Fastpitch Society, before the event.

“The 500 days to Surrey 2016 countdown will be a great opportunity to celebrate the sport of softball.”

The 2016 WBSC XV Women’s World Softball Championship will take place from July 15 to 24, 2016, in Surrey. This event will be the largest women’s fastpitch event in the world, with more than 30 countries coming to Canada to compete with the hopes of being named world champion.

The event was announced in October 2013

Tuesday's event honoured athletes, softball supporters and volunteers who have put countless hours into making the 2016 WBSC XV Women’s World Softball Championship a possibility.

“The excitement is building as we hit the 500-day mark before the start of the 2016 XV Women’s World Softball Championship in Surrey,” said Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

“Being chosen to host the best women’s fastpitch players from more than 30 countries is a testament to our reputation as a premier sport hosting destination.”
