AROUND TOWN: VE Day ceremony at Surrey Centre Cemetery (photos)

CLOVERDALE — Hundreds of candles were lit to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe) Saturday, May 9 at Surrey Centre Cemetery, on Old McLellan Road.

The late-afternoon ceremony saw cadets, war veterans, politicians and others place Canadian flags and special candles on the graves of those who served their country.

The tribute was sponsored by the Peace Arch branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, with brass bands, flagbearers and others in attendance. Vintage aircraft also did a flyover.

The candle-lighting ceremony first began in Holland in 1945, at the end of the Second World War.
