Art-inspired 'InFlux' at Surrey gallery Friday night

SURREY — There's much to check out during this Friday's InFlux (Feb. 27), a multi-media social event that mixes live music, performance art, DIY activities and more, at Surrey Art Gallery.

Showing off the southbank's lush cultural landscape are The Rupe and Puma Busking Experiment, DJ JT, Semiahmoo First Nations artist Roxanne Charles, James Dawson and the Star Captains.

"My artwork just reflects who I am, so it's going to incorporate some things from my culture but it's not at all traditional or a modern piece," said Charles, who will be doing a performance that incorporates First Nations-style hand drumming and singing.

"The piece is about consumption and urbanization, so it's connecting my history and place in that sort of thing," she said.

Charles also has a large weaving piece on display as part of the Views from the Southbank exhibit currently showing at the gallery.

Participants can also make cardboard hats and snap poses in the time-travelling photo booth.

InFlux runs from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday at Surrey Art Gallery, at Bear Creek Park. No tickets are necessary to attend the event, but a minimum $5 donation is suggested.
