The city is getting the word out about road improvements coming to Campbell Heights.
The City of Surrey held an open house Feb. 6 at the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre to detail the upcoming infrastructure upgrades.
Mayor Brenda Locke told the Cloverdale Reporter the city has had a great response from businesses in the area.
"Traffic is a challenge there," she said. "It's so difficult to get those trucks in. So getting 16th fixed and 24th, so the big trucks can get in and out, is going to be crucial to the development of the area."
On some of the roads, such a 16th Avenue, trucks have stalled going up the hill because the grade is too great.
The city is upgrading the roads in Campbell Heights in five spots. Project locations include (see map image above): 16th Avenue - 19000 block to 192nd Street (see map #1), 192nd Street - 16th Avenue to 28th Avenue (see map #2), 24th Avenue - 188th Street to 192nd Street (see map #3), 28th Avenue - 192nd Street to 194th Street (see map #4), and 32nd Avenue - 192nd Street to 196th Street (see map #5).
Road work in Campbell Heights will include: the addition of travel lanes, new signalized intersections and improved traffic movements at intersections, integrated cycling-walking facilities, and much more.
Locke said the construction is necessary because of the rapid growth of Campbell Heights.
"It's fantastic, when you're down there, to see the amount of industry developing."
Victor Jhingan, director of the engineering department's project delivery group, said the city had a great response to the open house. He said both businesses and residents were represented.
"Generally, the public has been receptive of all the infrastructure investment that we're making in South Surrey and Campbell Heights," he said. "(Attendees) were also pleased to hear that we're also looking at road improvements in the Grandview area, 24th Avenue, 16th Avenue. There's been tremendous growth in that area, as well."
Phase 1 for the project (192nd Street - 16th Avenue to 28th Avenue) will begin this summer, with tree clearing taking place in February. The city noted the other four phases will take place between 2026 and 2027. The City of Surrey is investing almost $30 million in the multi-phase project
"Once the improvements are done, it's going to make a huge difference for businesses in Campbell Heights," added Mayor Locke.
