Eight drug overdoses in Surrey over 24 hours, police warn

Surrey RCMP are warning the community of at least eight drug overdoses that have occurred in the city over the past 24 hours.

Officers have responded to several overdoses in which the individuals were apparently ingesting heroin, police said in a press release Wednesday evening (July 17).

"The persons immediately showed signs of overdose and, in at least three instances, extreme life-saving measures had to take place," police said.

"All persons were taken to local area hospitals and are recovering.

"The drug has not been analyzed to determine its concentration or makeup, so police are not able to say with certainty what the drug is, except to say the users were purchasing what they thought was heroin."

Surrey RCMP said they are concerned for those who participate in the activity of using street-level drugs, especially heroin, and are warning them of this current danger.
