Mom fit to stand trial in girl's murder

SURREY - The Surrey woman accused of murdering her daughter has been found fit to stand trial, following a psychiatric assessment.

Lisa Batstone, 41, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her eight-year-old daughter, Teagan Batstone.She appeared briefly in Surrey provincial court Monday. When she arrived in the prisoner's dock Batstone gave a small wave to her family and friends, then immediately started to cry. She was in tears during the short appearance, but mouthed "I love you" to her supporters and waved again when she left.She was arrested Dec. 10 after Teagan's body was found inside a car that had rolled part way into a ditch in the 13900-block of 35A Avenue in South Surrey.Batstone remains certified under the Mental Health Act and will continue to be held at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital.Outside court her lawyer, Craig Sicotte, said Batstone suffers from severe depression.Her next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 26.
