Mother’s Day treats were made by kids at one Surrey business this week.

On Friday (May 10), the Now-Leader was invited to Little Kitchen Academy to watch three youngsters bake Fresh Herb Shortbread with grated parmesan cheese and fresh rosemary.

Their moms will probably love them.

Instructor Sabine Sommer led Bryanna, Bryan and Arianna through the shortbread baking process, from start to flavourful finish.

For special occasions including Mother’s Day, the kids in various classes make special dishes or baked goods at Little Kitchen Academy, which is advertised as a Montessori-inspired kids cooking academy for kids aged three to 18.

“We’ve done Valentine’s Day cooking, and our teenage classes are very trendy,” explained Chandre Greyling, assistant director.

“With the Barbie trend, we had everything pink, and we do TikTok cooking trends as well. We do Pro-D Days, we just started birthday parties, and also toddlers with their moms.”

Students learn how to make healthy, delicious and seasonal meals from scratch to consumption, all while experimenting with math and science concepts, working on reading skills and polishing up their table manners by sharing meals around the LKA community table.

On Friday, the three kids weren’t so sure about the smell of the rosemary used in the shortbread, but worked hard to chop up the fragrant herb.

“We teach them how to cook and also about healthy eating habits,” Greyling said. “Maybe not of all of these kids will become chefs, but they will probably love to cook when they’re older. And with the food, a lot of kids come in and say something like, ‘Oh, I won’t eat that, it’s spinach,’ and then they cut it themselves and make something with the spinach, and then they like it, you know. They get those skills and love of nutritious foods for life.”
