The Museum of Surrey will host its annual sensory-friendly event at the end of the month.

The museum and the City of Surrey’s Accessibility Services Team are once again co-hosting “Sensory Fun” June 22 at the museum in Cloverdale.

“We believe that everyone in Surrey and beyond should be able to access museum programs and events,” museum manager Lynn Saffery said in a press release. “This means that we will continue to be free of charge, provide accessibility opportunities, and ensure everyone is welcome. I’m excited that this event at the Museum of Surrey has been made possible by staff and partners who value accessibility and fun.”

Museum-goers will be presented with “an array” of hands-on activities both inside and outside the museum. The museum will have several community partners on site too, with each hosting their own activities: TD Bank Group, Canucks Autism Network, Honeybee Centre, Surrey Nature Centre, Surrey Natural Areas Partnership, Surrey United Soccer, Centre of Child Development, Autism B.C., and others.

“Explore the galleries, complete a scavenger hunt, enjoy bubble blowing, have your face painted, take home your unique caricature portrait,” promises the press release. “Indulge in delicious ice cream treats from Rolled West Coast food truck, and unleash your creativity through craft-making.”

The Museum of Surrey’s “Sensory Friendly Room” will be open and sensory kits and beach-themed sensory bins will be available for play. Museum mascot Raj the Raccoon will also be on hand.

The Museum of Surrey has provided sensory-focused experiences on site since 2019—in collaboration with the Canucks Autism Network—when they started operating sensory-friendly hours (1o a.m. to noon) on the first Sunday of every month.

During sensory-friendly hours, the museum reduces the lighting and sound levels throughout the building for those sensitive to higher levels of both. The museum also offers noise-cancelling headphones at all times for guests.

“We invite the community to join us for a truly inclusive and celebratory event, embracing the diversity that enriches our community.”

“Sensory Fun” will run on June 22 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Museum of Surrey, 17710 56A Avenue. Entrance is free.
