Not your average orthodontic office, South Surrey Smiles brings a bright atmosphere to every visit.

Not many orthodontic offices have ipads, movie rooms and automated, colour-coded check-in to make the experience fun and engaging for patients, but then, not every orthodontic office looks at things the way the team at South Surrey Smiles does.

Led by Dr. Lesley Williams, a certified specialist in orthodontics, when it was time to build the South Surrey Smiles office, Dr. Williams ensured everyone on the team contributed to the process.

"The office looks and flows how it does because everyone was engaged in the process," she noted.

The facility features an automated check in system that guides patients to the right waiting area. Once there, pre-pasted toothbrushes are available at auto-flow sinks to conserve water. While waiting, patients, family and friends can use free wifi, ipads, take in a 3D movie or enjoy a customized latte or tea.

"It's very efficient and friendly," Dr. Williams said. "We want patients to have a positive experience. Everything is designed around function and logistics, but with a focus on patient comfort."

She noted kids actually enjoy going to the office, some even want to bring their friends along to see it.

Of course, a practice like South Surrey Smiles isn't built from chance. Dr. Williams has a wealth of experience behind her.

Having graduated from UBC in general dentistry, Dr. Williams later chose to study orthodontics because of the problem solving involved in the specialization. Orthodontics allows Dr. Williams to correct issues like overbites, underbites, space between teeth, and crooked teeth. She is very active in the governance of orthodontics serving as the Chief Examiner for Orthodontics with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada as well as an Examiner for the American Board of Orthodontics.

"I loved general dentistry, but I wanted to expand and specialize," she noted. "I'm really attracted to achieving superior esthetics and function. It keeps every day interesting."

Because she works closely with her staff and everyone is involved in client happiness, Dr. Williams built a team which is not only great at what they do, but also believes in creating a fun and friendly environment.

"We have patients from age 7 up to their 80s and it's important each of them is treated individually," Dr. Williams said.

Part of that individualization includes complimentary consultations and monitoring to ensure the right timing for treatments (if any are required) is achieved.

Each staff member is specially trained in orthodontics as well as general dental experience. Everyone on the team pursues ongoing training "“ above and beyond what is required by their licensing.

"I want my patients to know how important they are to us. Whether they need orthodontics now, down the road, or never, we want to be sure they are receiving the best possible care and attention to their needs," noted Dr. Williams. "We are always improving what we do and how we do it. We want to have a positive impact on each patient's life."

The team at South Surrey Smiles is always engaged within and outside the office working together at various fundraising and community events.

"It's about giving, supporting the community and being part of the community," summarized Dr. Williams.
