Star power at big Surrey teachers' convention Friday

SURREY — A couple of music stars are guest speakers at the annual convention held by Surrey Teachers' Association (STA) this Friday, May 1.

Entertainers Raffi Cavoukian — yes, that Raffi — and Buffy St. Marie will speak at the gathering, which includes more than 200 workshops at four sites — three in Surrey and one in Vancouver. Some "offsite" workshops are also planned.

The association boasts close to 5,000 members, and most of those will attend the convention, said Jennifer Wadge, STA president.

"Plus, we'll get some people from nearby districts, such as Langley and Delta," she told the Now. "We should have around 4,000 convention delegates."

The convention, designed with "professional growth workshops" at the heart of the event, has been in the works since last fall. All events are funded exclusively by teachers through their union dues, Wadge added.
