Learn more about raising chickens and the role poultry farming has played in Surrey's evolution as city at an upcoming exhibit at Historic Stewart Farm.

This fall, the 1894 Victorian-era farmhouse hosts Nobody Here But Us Chickens, running Fridays and Saturdays from Sept. 21 to Nov. 9.

The exhibit cracks open our fascination with chickens, explores the history of domesticated chickens and poultry farming, and looks at chicken care, coop design and more.

Visitors can learn how to raise their own backyard chickens and discover how these birds can control pests in the garden.

The exhibit opening is Saturday, Sept. 21, from noon to 3 p.m., when visitors can meet real heritage chickens, do feathery crafts and games, and take a guided tour of the exhibition with curator Lynn Saffery. (Note: the farm is also hosting its Olde Harvest Fair that day.)

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the farm hosts two programs on the chicken theme; the first is Backyard Chicken Basics, which covers the essentials of keeping chickens in the yard. Participants will learn about different breeds, their needs and car, and relevant city bylaws. Backyard Chicken Basics runs from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and it's open to ages 16 and up. The fee is $10.

Also on Oct. 5 is Eggsplorations, featuring experiments with eggs and crafts inspired by the age-old question: Which came first? The chicken or the egg? That runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., and it's for kids aged 6 to 11 years. The fee is $10.
