Staff at The Surrey-North Delta Leader got a little chilly and wet Tuesday afternoon, all for a good cause.

Challenged by various parties, staff at The Leader took part in the ALS ice bucket challenge, dousing themselves with ice water to raise awareness and funds for ALS research.

The Leader also invited Surrey Board of Trade president Anita Huberman to take the challenge at the same time.

The ice bucket challenge has garnered international attention for the disease on social media, through videos of people pouring buckets of ice water on their head and, hopefully, committing to donate to ALS societies.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – better known as Lou Gehrig's disease – is a non-contagious, neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive muscle atrophy and weakness leading to difficulty speaking, swallowing and breathing.

There are nearly 3,000 people in Canada with ALS.

After being doused with ice water, Leader publisher Jim Mihaly (left) challenged all past-presidents of the board of trade to take the ALS ice bucket challenge. Huberman challenged board of trade members and her staff, and Shaulene Burkett, assistant ad manager at The Leader, forwarded the challenge to staff at Peace Arch News and Langley Times, sister papers to the Surrey Leader.
