The Surrey Museum’s annual Pic-Knit event is on Saturday

Summer is the perfect time to bring out your knitting needles and kick back at the beach, the cottage or on your balcony with a new project.

Find plenty of knitting inspiration and supplies at the Surrey Museum’s annual Pic-Knit event on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shop for your stash with local vendors, meet members of Fraser Valley fibre arts guilds, and sign up for a workshop.

From hand-dyed, hand-spun, wool yarns, to shiny silk boucles and llama blends, to knitting kits, there will be a variety of products to inspire and entice visitors.

Families can drop by and say hello to Fun N Fur Fibres owner, Carol Funnell, and her mini-Jacob’s goat and angora bunnies. The Fraser Valley Knitter’s Guild will show you how to get started if you’re a novice, and you can find out about Children’s Hospital’s “Click for Babies” knitting program happening here in the Lower Mainland.

During this event the Museum will be hosting a “Knitted Felt” workshop with accomplished knitter Christine Allenby. Students will quickly knit up a pair of slippers with large needles and thick yarn. Using soap, water and agitation, watch them transform into cozy felt.( The knitted felt workshop happens from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Museum; there is a fee of $26.50, plus supply fee of $15. Please pre-register at 604-592-6956).

Visitors are also invited to browse the Hooser Textile Library’s extensive collection of rare books and patterns. The Museum’s Textile Studio, which houses a rare Jacquard loom, will be the place to watch demonstrations of heritage crafts and try weaving on demonstration looms.

Admission to this event is by donation. The Surrey Museum is located at 17710 56A Ave. Admission to exhibit galleries for 2012 is sponsored by the Friends of the Surrey Museum Society.
