A Simon Fraser University student and Surrey resident is among 13 Canadians shortlisted for a national award recognizing their dedication to democratic participation.

Japreet Lehal, 20 – who writes The Leader's Youth Voice column twice monthly – was nominated as an Everyday Political Citizen for his work in the community, including his volunteer work at the university, where he is currently the youngest member of the board of directors for the school's community trust.

Fourteen judges from across the country nominated a shortlist for the contest, organized by non-partisan think tank Samara.

On Feb. 3, the panel will select the two top Everyday Political Citizens of 2013 (one adult and one under-18 winner).
