SURREY — Cash prizes totalling $4,250 are up for grabs in a new Gingerbread Village contest/event launched by Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association (BIA).

Sweet entries in five categories will be on display at Central City Shopping Centre from Dec. 14 to 16.

“Create a house that models after your favourite local business, your residence, or even an iconic building in Downtown Surrey,” Kyla Fraser, an events intern with the BIA, says in an invitation to enter. “Now is the perfect time to get creative!”

Contest categories are High School, University, Community & Service Groups, Charities/Non Profits and Open (for “businesses and individuals within the community”).

Over the course of the weekend, voters will be encouraged to make cash donations to Surrey Christmas Bureau.

Winners will be announced during an evening event at the mall on Friday, Dec. 15, with music, snacks and face painters.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the top two entries in each category – $500 for first place and $250 for second. A “secret panel of community judges” will also select a $500 “People’s Choice Award” winner, to be announced via Facebook on Dec. 18.

“This event is a great way to get your family, friends, or staff into the holiday spirit, raise money for the Surrey Christmas Bureau, and potentially win a cash prize,” Fraser added.
