Teen shot below butt near school

SURREY – A 16-year-old Surrey boy was shot just below his right buttock in a parking lot east of Maple Green Elementary Monday night.

Police received word that multiple shots had been fired at roughly 148th Street and Spencer Drive around 6:30 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing a group of males running into a vehicle and leaving the scene.

Police say they found several shell casings that appeared to be from a handgun. While securing the area, Surrey RCMP got word that a teenager had just walked into Surrey Memorial Hospital’s emergency room with a gunshot wound below his right buttock. The victim told police he was walking by himself when he was shot.

“We had members attend the hospital and it quickly became evident that the two incidents were linked,” said Cpl. Bert Paquet, adding the victim didn’t provide police with many details.

“We’re still looking into the details of his statement, or of his version of events. We were advised he saw what he believed were four or five males in the area, and it was dark. We have no description on vehicles or possible suspects,” Paquet noted. “Based on the very limited details provide by the victim, we are looking at all possible scenarios, but we don’t believe this is a random shooting. We are trying to confirm exactly what took place.”

The teen is not known to police and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Serious Crime Unit is investigating, and police were still canvassing the area for witnesses and video footage Tuesday.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them at 604-599-0502, or to do so anonymously, to contact Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
