Steve Butz admits his family thinks his self-imposed fundraising venture is “a tad nuts.”

On Dec. 19, the president and CEO of YMCA of Greater Vancouver will walk 44K from the Tong Louie Family YMCA in Surrey to the Robert Lee YMCA in Downtown Vancouver.

His focus is raising money for two causes, the YMCA and The United Way.

“So, here’s the ask: One one-hundreth of a cent per step,” he says. “That’s it.”

So far, he’s reached about 71 per cent of his goal of $10,000, which would be split equally between the two.

This walk is his way giving back and he calls it his “50,000 Step Challenge.”

“Both organizations pursue a cause we all care about: United Way invests in programs that rid schools of bullying; the Y’s invests in young people and their capacity for leadership,” says Butz.
