'Chelsea Hotel' brings Cohen's music to Surrey stage

SURREY - They are some of the most iconic songs in Canadian music, and they're at the heart of the new Arts Club on Tour production.

In a fusion of music, theatre and dance, Vancouver-based Arts Club Theatre Company is bringing the Firehall Arts Centre production of Chelsea Hotel to the stage at Surrey Arts Centre, from Thursday, Feb. 20 to Saturday, March 1. The production pays tribute to the work of Leonard Cohen, with performers playing 17 instruments in new arrangements of his work. The show stars Rachel Aberle, Lauren Bowler, Steve Charles, Ben Elliott, Marlene Ginader and Kayvon Kelly.

"Cohen is a Canadian icon, and Chelsea Hotel is such an entertaining, inventive staging of Cohen's work," said Donna Spencer, artistic producer of the Firehall Arts Centre. "It not only captures the imagination of Cohen fans but also introduces a whole new generation to his music."

The Montreal-born Cohen wrote such hits as "Bird on a Wire" and "Hallelujah."
