Soundscape A Cappella Chorus is taking a very different approach to its next performance, June 3 and 4 at 7 p.m. at Parkland Fellowship Baptist Church, 9574 160 Street.
Instead of the traditional concert, the well-known, 31-strong group (including many members from the Semiahmoo Peninsula) is presenting An Evening at the Serenity Gardens Cafe – a musical showcase with a comedy plot, presented in dinner theatre format.
The show represents the grand re-opening of the mythical Serenity Gardens Cafe following its untimely closure due to mysterious ‘health’ issues. And according to chorus members Dianne Harding, Jerry Johnson and Ron Flaterud, it’s an event likely to be anything but serene, due to the collision of such strong personalities as the officious maître d’ (Johnson), owner Mr. Bossman (Flaterud), feisty chef (Pat Parsons) and clumsy waitress Blackbird (Corie Robson).
“The dialogue sets up the songs,” said Flaterud, who adds the material from the Beatles and Billy Joel to the B-52s and Michael Buble.
“But we do allow the audience to eat without bothering them,” Harding said.
“That allows us to circulate and fill in the plot,” added Johnson.
