SOUTH SURREY — A public event Saturday (May 10) will celebrate the grand opening of the expanded South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre, located at 14601 20th Ave.

The facility now includes an 8,000-square-foot weight room, a childminding room, an arts multipurpose room and studios devoted to fitness, pottery and visual arts.

Saturday's event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., includes a free barbecue, ribbon-cutting ceremony, public art unveiling, entertainment, activities for all ages (including dance lessons and an obstacle course), prizes draws and a "For the Health of It" seniors wellness fair.

The facility, which has operated as a recreation centre since 2005, has expanded to include 5,300 square feet of arts-focused space, managed by Semiahmoo Arts, the local arts council. The expansion project included a $250,000 donation from the South Surrey & White Rock Art Society.
