SURREY — Lighted trucks and other vehicles will roll on Surrey streets this coming Sunday (Dec. 3), with a couple of special events planned along the route.

In Cloverdale, the annual Surrey Santa Parade of Lights runs from the truck museum parking lot on 60th Avenue and travels through the neighbourhood’s downtown core, starting at 5 p.m.

The 12th annual event is organized by the Cloverdale BIA, with the help of local businesses, non-profit organizations, clubs “and many volunteers who believe in the magic of Santa,” parade organizers say in a post at surreysantaparade.com.

The event was inspired by “the most watched commercial of all time,” the 1997 Coca-Cola lighted truck commercial, which was partially filmed in Downtown Cloverdale, the website notes.

The convoy includes highly decorated “big rigs” from the Island Equipment Owners Association, based on Vancouver Island.

Those who want to join in the parade can apply by completing an entry form posted on the surreysantaparade.com website.

“This year, the BIA’s from Cloverdale, Downtown Surrey, and Fleetwood districts have worked together to grow the Surrey Santa Parade and the Big Rigs for Kids Parade into a larger event,” the website says. “Our goal is to have activity centres in each of our town centres that will be family-friendly, fun and entertaining.”

After the parade in Cloverdale, the trucks will head north along Highway 15 to Fraser Highway, where they will turn left and travel to Surrey City Centre.

At Surrey Civic Plaza (13450 104th Ave.), the Big Rigs For Kids parade takes place on Sunday from 4:30 to 8 p.m., with music by Chris Hamilton at 4:30 p.m. and a Christmas Carol sing-a-long from 5 to 6 p.m. Surrey Food Bank and the Surrey Christmas Bureau will be on site collecting donations, and Central City Lions will also be there selling hot dogs and hot chocolate.
