Some thought-provoking movies will be screened in South Surrey and White Rock this week, and next.

A "Movies for Change" series starts at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 at Semiahmoo Library with "The Greatest Movie Ever Sold," director Morgan Spurlock's exploration of product placement and advertising in Hollywood films. A discussion will follow the screening, at 1815 152nd St., Surrey.

The series continues on Feb. 15 (with "The Great Debaters," based on the story of professor Melvin Tolson, who inspired a championship debate team in the Jim Crow south) and March 8 ("No Impact Man," focusing on the Manhattan-based Beavan family as they try to live a year making no environmental impact).

Elsewhere, the documentary film "Bidder 70" is up next in the monthly series hosted by White Rock Social Justice Film Society.

The 73-minute doc, directed by Beth and George Gage, is about a grad student's fraudulent bid – at a federal auction – to save 22,000 acres of land in Utah from exploration by oil companies.

"Bidder 70" will be shown at First United Church starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at 15385 Semiahmoo Ave., White Rock.

Meanwhile, Semiahmoo Arts revives its Get Reel film series with "Still Mine," a 2012 Canadian film about an elderly couple's fight against local authorities in rural New Brunswick to build their final home. The movie, starring James Cromwell and Geneviève Bujold, will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29 at White Rock Community Centre, 15154 Russell Ave.
