Surrey youth are invited to enter a brand new art contest that’s open to high school students in the Greater Vancouver area.
It’s being organized by Celine Chen, a teen from West Vancouver who grew increasingly troubled by the lack of art contests for young people and has decided to do something about it.
She founded the Greater Vancouver Art Contest, making its debut this winter.
“Art is easily one of the most overlooked and undervalued subjects in school and society as many people cannot appreciate its beauty,” she says, explaining how in addition to its aesthetic value, art also serves as a means of communication for thoughts and ideas.
She hopes the contest will provide students with an opportunity to express their
creativity as well as spur them to greater expressive heights.
“I strongly believe that one of the most critical components to become a successful artist is to be exposed to other artists’ work for inspiration,” says Chen, a Grade 11 student at Mulgrave School.
The Greater Vancouver Art Contest is open to youth in Grades 8 to 12. There are two categories: Junior (Grades 8 to 10) and Senior (Grades 11 and 12). The theme is “Find Your Inner Superhero.”
To qualify, entrants must be high school students in Greater Vancouver area.
Entries must be 2D, including drawing, painting and mixed media. Note: digital art, photography and film submissions will not be accepted.
The registration deadline is Feb. 15, and the deadline for submissions is March 15.
The top 20 entries selected by a panel of judges will be included in an online showcase running from May 1 to 7, when fans can vote for their favourites.
The top three winners will be announced May 6. First prize is a $500 scholarship.
