Call them the Surrey Little Theatre-Ryan Mooney awards.
Honours for 2013 were handed out by the Community Theatre Coalition Saturday (Sept. 21) at Coast Capital Playhouse, and, with only a few exceptions, they were swept by two shows: Surrey Little Theatre's Second World War drama Home Fires and Mooney's early `60s-style musical Little Shop of Horrors, for Fighting Chance Productions.
The latter show – which was presented as a summer co-production with White Rock Players last year before a fall run in Vancouver – took a total of 10 awards, to Home Fires' seven.
Also notable at the CTC gala was the presentation of lifetime achievement awards to two well-known community theatre personalities, costumer and set decorator Pat MacLean and director Dale Kelly.
Little Shop, judged best musical production by CTC representatives from all participating clubs, also won for best director of a musical (Ryan Mooney), best lead actor in a musical (Kerry O' Donovan, Seymour), best lead actress in a musical (Melissa Clark, Audrey), best supporting actor in a musical (Greg Dalmage, Orin Scrivello and other roles) and best supporting actress in a musical (Veronika Sztopa, Ronette).
Mooney's musical also got the nod for best choreographer (Angela Cotton), best music director (Vashti Fairbairn), best lighting design (Matthew Bissett) and best graphic design, poster (Devin Karringten and Mooney).
Home Fires, chosen best production, comedy or drama, by CTC representatives, won for best director (Brigitte Seib and Paul Cowhig), best supporting actor (Greg Radzimowski, Sonny), best costume design (Bunny Patterson), best set design (Seib) and best set decoration (Lana Hart).
Best supporting actress honours were shared by Home Fires' Rebecca Strom (Susanna) and Sheila Greentree, who played Lenya Zubritsky in White Rock Players Club's Fools (which was also directed by Mooney).
Another notable split decision was the award for best actor, shared by actors in two Langley Players Club productions, Reginald Pillay (Shorty, in Jim and Shorty) and Ken Boyd (Michael Novak, in God of Carnage).
Best performance by an actress in a leading role went to Tracy Labrosse (Suzy Hendrix, in New Westminster-based Vagabond Players' Wait Until Dark).
Fraser Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society's pantomime The Phantom of the Panto received recognition for best graphic design, programme, for Paddy Tennant.
