'Surrey Shines' at showcase

SURREY - Some of Surrey's most talented teens performed at the eighth annual Surrey Shines talent show Saturday.

The event, hosted by the Youth Arts Council of Surrey, featured music, dance and magic at Surrey Arts Centre.Lara West, a member of the Arts Council of Surrey, said the level of talent she sees at their age is amazing. "They are just so talented and professional, and all are very, very wonderful to work with," she said.Participants in the youth-led talent show are between the ages of 13 and 21.Amrit Rai, president of the youth arts council, thinks it's important to highlight the talent and the more positive parts of the community with events such as these. "I think it's an amazing way to get youth involved," Rai said. "In the five years I've been here, I've seen more and more engagement, which is really good to see."Acts included Switch to Black, Sudnya Dance Academy, Richard Tichelman, Miguel Maravilla and Charity Cruz, Victoria Strachan, Cassidy Poulton, XBa Dance Company, Panic Picnic, Spiral Dance Company, Angela Boer, Just 4 Kicks School of Dance, Alexis Lynn, Nhemy Cepeda, Billy Hseuh and Alanna & Brianne.samanthaelego@gmail.com
