SURREY — A play set in an abandoned greenhouse during a plague is coming to Surrey next month, with local teens in the spotlight.

Jordan Tannahill’s award-winning drama “Concord Floral” will be staged at Surrey Arts Centre’s Studio Theatre on Feb. 3 and 4 as part of a tri-city tour of the region.

Conceived to give youth a platform for expression, the script has 10 teens looking to find refuge from a plague they’ve brought upon themselves.

“Concord Floral” won the 2015 Dora Award for Outstanding New Play, and a Globe and Mail theatre critic called it “artfully structured, yet full of suspense, with dialogue that shifts smoothly between the poetic and observational. It’s got style and substance – and is scary as all get out.”

Surrey Civic Theatres is a presenter of the tour, along with Touchstone Theatre, PuSh International Performing Arts Festival and Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

“It is crucial to us that the play be performed by actual teenagers so that their real presence and experiences inform what the work offers,” noted Erin Brubacher, director, producer and co-creator of “Concord Floral,” which draws inspiration from “The Decameron,” written by 14th-century Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio.

Show ticket prices range from $10 to $25 at the Surrey Arts Centre box office. For details, phone 604-501-5566 or visit Tickets.Surrey.ca.
