A White Rock project designed to merge culture with physical activity has been approved for a $5,000 refresher.

Council decided at the March 10 meeting to approve the recommendation of the Public Art and Culture Advisory Committee to allocate the money (available in the Public Art and Placemaking Fund) to refresh the Poetry in Motion project.

The project was begun in 2023 after the city and the Fraser Health Authority received a B.C. Healthy Community Grant. Poetry in Motion invited the community to explore poetry while walking through the city's parks and open spaces.

A total of 10 interpretive signs were installed in Maccaud Park, Dr. R. J. Allan Hogg Rotary Park and at Five Corners, featuring famous poems selected to reflect White Rock's cutural heritage.

According to a report from cultural development manager Rebecca Forrest and recreation and culture director John Woolgar, the program has "evolved with a new focus to feature the work of local poets and community members.

"As part of this update, the program will invite people of all ages from the Peninsula to submit their poetry, with selected works being showcased for up to two years."

In answer to a question from Coun. Christopher Trevelyan, Woolgar told council the $5,000 would go for signage including the new poems, and honorariums to the poets, as well as promotional material and printing of maps.
