Who said watching paint dry wasn’t exciting?

Surrey watercolour artist gives a free talk at the Surrey Art Gallery Jan. 9.

Who would think that watching paint dry could be exciting and suspenseful? Anyone who has been captivated by the magic of painting in watercolour.

On Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Thursday Artist Talk speaker series at the Surrey Art Gallery, Surrey-based artist Rhonda Philips will discuss her painting process, techniques, and inspiration using a slide show and many of her original paintings.

Philips is an instinctive painter who has combined her fascination with watercolour and love of the West Coast into realistic paintings featuring a natural colour palette. Admission to the Surrey talk is free.

Philips never had to choose which medium was right for her; it was always watercolour. Growing up in Vancouver, she was the child with the sketchbook who used the margins of her schoolwork for drawing, and always dreamed of her grown-up self painting watercolours at the beach.

Five years ago, Philips realized that it was past time to make that dream come true, and get serious about her painting. After a handful of lessons from master artist Linda Muttitt, she struck out on her own to develop her instinctive personal style of painting, and has never looked back. (view her work at

There will be time for questions and conversation during and following the talk. The event concludes by 9 p.m. Refreshments are provided. This event is presented by the Surrey Art Gallery Association in partnership with the Surrey Art Gallery, and with support from the Arts Council of Surrey.
