Early-morning fire in South Surrey closes 176 Street for several hours

Blaze reportedly woke neighbours with explosions

Firefighters battled an early-morning fire in South Surrey Wednesday, just across the street from Urban Safari Rescue Society.

The blaze involved a Quonset-style structure located on the property, in the 1300-block of 176 Street, which had some vehicles inside – including semi trucks, Surrey Fire Service assistant chief Mike McNamara said.

Surrey's firefighters were alerted to the fire around 3:30 a.m., with one neighbour at the scene later in the day reporting being woken by explosions, likely from extra fuel sources, such as propane tanks, on the property.

"It appeared that it was some sort of mechanic shop," McNamara said.

No one was injured in the fire; the cause is unknown.

176 Street was closed between 16 and 8 Avenues as firefighters battled the blaze and put out hot spots during the morning commute.

A fire inspector was on scene later in the day Wednesday to investigate what caused the blaze.
