Green Team spends rainy long weekend Saturday on White Rock's West Beach

Volunteers remove 44 bathtubs of Himalayan blackberry on soggy weekend

Instead of spending the May long weekend at a soggy campsite, several volunteers opted to instead, help clear invasive plants in White Rock.

Geared up with rain jackets and boots, gloves, loppers, shovels and "a positive attitude," volunteers helped take care of West Beach in a cleanup even organized by the Lower Mainland Green Team and the City of White Rock, a Green Team release said.

The hands-on activity brought together community members of all ages and experience levels to remove invasive Himalayan blackberry and strengthen both this dune habitat and community ties, a Green Team email noted.

More than 40 volunteers worked together to cut back and dig up the stubborn roots of the invasive blackberry that has dominated much of this area in the past, removing seven cubic metres, or 44 bathtubs, of the thorny, aggressive plant to improve habitat for local wildlife and the overall health and function of the area.

Saturday's event marked five years since the Green Team started its restoration work at West Beach in 2021, the email said.
