Alex Joehl, who ran in the October provincial election, is running in the federal byelection to fill the MP seat for Cloverdale-Langley City.

Joehl has represented the federal Libertarians three times historically, most recently in Langley-Aldergrove in 2019. In the recent provincial election, he ran in the riding of Langley-Abbotsford and has run in municipal elections as well. He is currently the president of the B.C. Libertarian Party.

“Running in this byelection is important to me because I want to make sure that all voters have a principled, liberty-based option to vote for,” Joehl said. “Too often we see many voters stay home on election day because there is no one worth getting of the couch for. I’m here to give them a reason to be part of the electorate again.”

Libertarians have not yet had a candidate before in the Cloverdale-Langley City riding.

The federal seat has been empty since Aldag resigned mid-2024 to run for the B.C. NDP in the provincial Langley-Abbotsford riding. He was defeated by provincial Conservative Harman Bhangu.

Joehl said he's running to bring up issues other parties won't, including abolition of the Bank of Canada. His platform includes banking reform, eliminating income tax and the carbon tax, using the GST to fund reduced federal government, ending the monopoly of cash being the only legal tender, to allow for crypto and other currencies, and remove Canadians from all international conflicts.

While Joehl lives in a neighbouring riding, he said he "works and plays within the riding’s boundaries."

Also running in the riding are Pat McCutcheon (Greens), Madison Fleischer (Liberals), Tamara Jansen (Conservatives), and Vanessa Sharma (NDP).

A byelection was officially called on Sunday Nov. 10 to elect a new MP for the riding. The election is set for Monday, Dec. 16, with four days of advance polls running Dec. 6, 7, 8, and 9.

According to a press release from Elections Canada, a riding election office was opened on Nov. 10 at 6279 202nd Street in Langley. For info on how to vote, where to register, or anything else about the byelection, visit elections.ca.
