Remembering those who serve is something many do, every day.
On Nov. 11, people gather around the world to honour those who fought and died — and those who still serve — in all levels of the Canadian military.
This Remembrance Day, which happens Monday, Nov. 11, things will get started at around 10:40 a.m. at the White Rock Cenotaph, with a short parade — featuring a colour guard — from Roper Avenue down to White Rock City Hall on Buena Vista Avenue, where the cenotaph is located.
Immediately after, the Remembrance Day Ceremony and laying of wreaths will take place at 11 a.m. at the Cenotaph at White Rock City Hall.
“As we gather on Remembrance Day, we honour the bravery and sacrifices of our veterans and express deep gratitude for their service,” said White Rock Mayor Megan Knight in a release.
“This ceremony is an opportunity for our community to come together, reflect, and ensure that the legacy of our soldiers both past and present is never forgotten. We invite everyone in White Rock to join us in paying tribute to those who have given so much for our freedom.”
There's also entertainment planned at the White Rock Legion (2290 15 St.) after Remembrance ceremonies from 2 to 7 p.m., including live entertainment from Twice Shy, Cheek to Cheek, the Jitterbug Dancers, Jonathan Hicks as Buddy Holly and Colleen Dee as Brenda Lee.
Glenn Eden, in charge of advertising for the White Rock branch, said it's important to honour the past, and those who served — and still serve — as well as their families.
"I encourage people to come out and remember those who sacrificed so much, for freedoms we have today," he said.
"It's important to remember our past, so we don't repeat it."
In Crescent Beach, Remembrance activities start around 10 a.m. at the branch, 2643 128 St., with events planned to start at 11 a.m. that will include cadets, a wreath-laying ceremony and more.
Afterward, meat pies and refreshments will be served in the Legion's canteen, with live entertainment starting at 2 p.m. as well.
In Cloverdale, things are expected to get underway shortly before 10:30 a.m. When that service ends, there will be a parade from Veterans' Square to the Legion, with 500 people expected to march.
