Roller derby skaters battle it out in November in a picture posted to the Greater Vancouver Roller Derby Association Facebook page. The group is currently looking for new members and has a rookie program beginning this month.

If you haven't yet made a New Year’s resolution, the Greater Vancouver Roller Derby Association (GVRDA) has an idea: strap on some roller skates and learn the art of roller derby.

In a December post to the organization's Facebook page, the GVRDA asks, “Waiting for the new year to start a new hobby? Learn a new sport? Meet all of your new best friends?”

Answering its own questions, the group exhorts readers to “Sign up now for your favourite new years resolution and push yourself to try something new."

Registration is currently open for the next incarnation fo the GVRDA’s Roller Derby Rookies Program.

The Facebook post notes that no previous roller derby, or roller skating, experience is necessary.

“Our amazing coaches will teach you everything you need to know about roller derby and roller skating,” notes another post on the GVRDA’s Facebook page.

Open to all genders, the Roller Derby Rookies Program runs practices in the Alice McKay building on Mondays from 7 to 10 p.m. Their 2025 rookie intake begins Jan. 13 and runs until April 7.

Cost is $40 per month, plus insurance, and all skaters must be 18 or older.

To sign up, or to find out more info, visit the Greater Vancouver Roller Derby Association’s Facebook page or their website at greatervancouverrollerderby.com.

The Alice McKay building is located at 6060 176th Street on the Cloverdale Fairgrounds.
