An eight-block stretch of 32 Avenue in South Surrey is anticipated to be shut down for around two months this summer, if council gives the thumbs-up tonight (Feb. 24) to some $15 million in contracts for road-widening and other upgrades.
According to a corporate report included in tonight's agenda, Timbro Contracting Ltd. is recommended for the roadworks targeting 176 to 184 Street, for which the company estimates costs of $14,454,802.95.
Planned work, the report explains, includes widening the busy thoroughfare from two lanes to four, to support growth and increased traffic volumes. Pedestrian and cycling infrastructure is to also be included, as are upgrades to drainage infrastructure.
Staff are also recommending a further $555,083 contract for "related engineering construction services" be awarded to RF Binnie & Associates Ltd.
The upgrades, the report continues, represent the second phase of a multi-phased program aimed at improving transportation and goods movement in Campbell Heights. Phase 1 – expected complete this spring – is underway along 32 Avenue between 184 and 188 streets.
Phase 3 will widen the stretch between 192 and 196 streets.
The work covered by the contracts on tonight's agenda is expected to begin this month and be completed by fall 2026.
