The Surrey Eagles are bringing their league championship cup to the Cloverdale Fairgrounds July 1. The team will interact with fans and offer opportunities for people to snap pics with the trophy and the junior hockey players.
The Eagles captured the Fred Page Cup, the BCHL’s league championship trophy, in six games over the Penticition Vees at the end of May.
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke said in a press release she was “thrilled” to be welcoming the Eagles to the Surrey Canada Day celebration in Cloverdale.
“Their enthusiasm and energy will make the largest Canada Day event in Western Canada all the more special for attendees,” said Locke. “Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to meet Surrey’s champions and be a part of Surrey's Canada Day festivities.”
Eagles players will march in with the cup during the opening ceremony at 1:30 p.m. The players will play street hockey with fans and pose for pictures in the “Community Hub” area from 3 to 6 p.m. The team will greet the crowd on the main stage at 8:30 p.m., right before Canadian rock 'n' rollers The Sheepdogs jump on stage at 9 p.m.
“The Surrey Eagles are proud to be a part of the Surrey Canada Day festivities,” Saje Brar, director of operations for the team, also said in the release. “We are excited to bring the Fred Page Cup back to Surrey for all of the community to see and share the team’s success.”
According to the release, the Eagles are one of North America's top junior hockey programs and the team is very civic-minded, as they “contribute positively to Surrey’s community through volunteering, fundraising, and school visits.”
Along with the Eagles players, the Community Hub will feature dance battles and dance lessons, local DJ performances, and free pony rides for kids. The Community Hub is being sponsored by Chalo! FreshCo and will also have several food trucks on hand.
Surrey Canada Day will be held at the Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre with gates opening at 10 a.m. and fireworks ending the celebration at 10:30 p.m. (after The Sheepdogs).
