Surrey RCMP's Serious Crime Unit is supporting the B.C. Coroner in investigating the death Aug. 6 of a five-week-old baby.

Sgt. Tammy Lobb confirmed Tuesday (Aug. 13) that police responded to a home near 86 Avenue and 152A Street at approximately 10 a.m. Aug. 6, to assist BC Emergency Health Services with an infant "in medical distress."

"The infant was transported to hospital by EHS, but despite life-saving efforts, the infant was pronounced deceased," Lobb said.

The Mounties are working with the Ministry of Children and Family Development as well as the coroner's service, and the investigation is ongoing, Lobb added.

RCMP did not disclose the names of the child or its parents, however, a GoFundMe page launched by a woman identified by other media as the baby's mother asks for financial assistance with a memorial stone for "our handsome baby." The infant "was only 1 month and never gotten (sic) to live an actual life or anything," the post notes.
