Surrey women's club marks milestone anniversary with bursary

CFUW White Rock/Surrey celebrating 65 years

An "equality-seeking, advocacy organization that works to advance the human rights of women and girls" is inviting applications from White Rock, Surrey and Langley women for its annual education/career-supporting bursaries.

Canadian Federation of University Women White Rock/Surrey officials will present a total of $13,500 in bursaries in late September, including its 65th Anniversary Bursary valued at $6,500.

Also available is the $4,000 Mary Frean Bateman in Memoriam Bursary, and the 1988 Executive Board $3,000 bursary.

The funds aim to boost education efforts of women who are either working towards a university or college education, or aiming for a career in the trades.

According to a news release encouraging applications, recipients in recent years have included a single mom returning to college in pursuit of a law degree; a graduate student at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine working towards a Master of Science in epidemiology; a single mom working as an education assistant as she attends part-time studies to become a teacher; and a young woman volunteering in her immigrant community as she studies to become a community social worker.

Since 2003, the CFUW Bursary Foundation has presented 72 local women with bursaries totalling $177,500, the release adds.

Since the local club’s launch in 1959, more than $300,000 in bursaries has been awarded.

It marked its 60th anniversary in part by presenting a $10,000 Jubilee Bursary. The award also honoured one of the bursary program's founding members, Elizabeth Bordeaux.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, in need of a financial boost to further their post-secondary education – whether that is trades training, a diploma program or a university/college degree.

In the past, applications have been available through the CFUW website, however, with a "fresh and more interactive website under construction," that particular route is not currently an option, club vice-president Penny Harrington said.

For that reason, the deadline to apply will be extended beyond the usual end-of-May cut-off, she added.

In the meantime, application forms may be requested via email to cfuwsurreybursaries@gmail.com
